Manual physical therapy techniques involve hands-on joint and soft tissue mobilization to reduce pain and improve joint function. This specialized form of physical therapy using hands as opposed to a device or machine. Activo physical therapists use their hands to pressure muscle tissue and manipulate joints to decrease pain caused by muscle spasms, muscle tension, and joint dysfunction. Activo PTs have extensive training and experience in manual therapy. Our experts incorporate manual techniques in your treatment plan to help you increase your activity and function at home and work.
In general, manual physical therapy techniques employ the following types of movement:
- Soft tissue work, including massage, applies pressure to the body’s soft tissues, such as the muscles. This pressure can help relax muscles, increase circulation, break up scar tissue, and ease pain in the soft tissues.
- Mobilization/manipulation, in which a therapist uses a hands-on approach to encourage improved joint mobility and freedom of movement. These techniques help loosen tight tissues around joints, reducing pain and maximizing flexibility and alignment.
